When Do Redbuds Bloom in Virginia & Their Varieties

Yes, we have our peepers being noisy, and some people use this as a sign that spring has arrived. But me? I like seeing our Redbud trees in bloom as a sign of spring. As I drive around the Richmond area, I love seeing these trees in bloom in our woods. Their clusters of pink to fuchsia flowers hug the bare branches before the tree ever considers leafing out. Then, at the end of flowering, it gives way to its heart-shaped leaves.

When Do Redbuds Bloom in Virginia?

In Virginia, Eastern Redbuds typically begin blooming in late March to early April, depending on the weather and location. In warmer areas like Richmond, you may start to see their vibrant pink to fuchsia flowers pop earlier in the spring season. The blooms usually last for two to three weeks, putting on a spectacular show before the heart-shaped leaves begin to emerge. Redbuds are one of the first trees to flower in the spring, making them a reliable and beautiful sign that winter is officially behind us.

    • Joli,
Good Morning. Mistakes do happen – even in gardening. I would be surprised that it doesn’t come back and start to grow again. So, be patient and let’s see what develops over the next couple of months. Doug
