EXPLORING PLANTS NATIVE TO VIRGINIA<\/h2>\n

My native plant highlight for this month is DOELLINGERIA umbellata, <\/em>commonly known as the Parasol Whitetop Aster<\/strong>. I picked this native because of its late summer\/fall blooming time. This beautiful native plant symbolizes fall here in Central Virginia.<\/p>\n

Parasol Whitetop is an upright grower with narrow oval leaves and clusters of daisy-like flowers on top of the stems\u2014flat-topped white petals widely right the bright yellow centers. This Aster is genuinely a beautiful native plant. It is a herbaceous perennial that is easy to grow. Here are just a few characteristics of the Parasol Whitetop Aster:<\/p>\n

  1. This plant prefers a slightly acidic loamy soil that stays a little moist to occasionally wet.<\/li>\n
  2. They want to be planted in full sun to partial shade.<\/li>\n
  3. They are hardy from Zone 3 to Zone 9.<\/li>\n
  4. Whitetops will grow two to five feet tall and just about as wide.<\/li>\n
  5. Whitetop is drought-tolerant.<\/li>\n
  6. Its flowers are nectar-rich and attract butterflies and bees.<\/li>\n
  7. This plant is deer and rabbit-resistant.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
