SEPTEMBER IS THE START OF THE FALL IS FOR PLANTING SEASON<\/h3>\n

Fall will officially be here on Monday, September 22nd. So, why is fall the best planting season of the entire year? It comes down to our soil temperature, along with the cooler fall air. Right now, our soil temperature is 82 degrees. Roots grow best in warm soil, which is what we have here in early September. Another reason why Fall is a good planting season is that there are fewer pests around to bother our newly planted plants.<\/p>\n

GARDENING CHORES FOR SEPTEMBER<\/h3>\n

LAWN CARE<\/h4>\n

September is the month to seed or reseed your lawn with the cool-season fescue grass seed blend. And, if you follow the S.O.D. program, then September is the first month for applying a quality lawn fertilizer<\/p>\n

PRUNING<\/h4>\n

According to the GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL PRUNING CALENDAR, there is nothing you should be pruning this month. The reason is that pruning encourages a plant to put out new growth. You do not want this to be happening now because this new growth will not have time to \u201charden off\u201d before winter.<\/p>\n

HOUSEPLANTS<\/h4>\n

Now is the time to think about prepping your tropical houseplants for coming back in side. All tropical plants want to be indoors before our temperatures drop below 50 degrees.<\/p>\n

SPRING FLOWERING BULBS<\/h4>\n

Our big selection of bulbs are in stock. Daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, etc. all can be planted in September. Please note: now is the time to purchase your tulip bulbs. But, hold off on planting tulip bulbs until closer to Thanksgiving when are soil temperature is much cooler.<\/p>\n

VEGETABLE PLANTING<\/h4>\n

September is the beginning month for planting our cool-season vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach, kale, broccoli, collards, and others. These vegetables love the cooler soil and air temperatures.<\/p>\n
