If your irises are like mine, they\u2019re starting to go dormant from the summer heat and showing yellow foliage. Now is the perfect time to divide your irises. These popular garden perennials need dividing every few years to prevent overcrowding, which reduces blooms and increases the risk of foliar diseases, especially in our Virginia climate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dividing Bearded Iris isn\u2019t a difficult task, and here in Virginia, July and August are ideal months to do it, right after they finish blooming.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">STEPS TO DIVIDING BEARDED IRIS<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"865\">Trim the foliage back to about 4 inches from the rhizome. Cutting the leaves at an angle helps expose the rhizome resting on top of the soil.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"999\">Use a shovel or garden fork to gently lift the rhizome clumps. If your irises are in containers or mixed beds, a trowel works well.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1068\">Shake off excess soil and carefully separate the rhizomes by hand.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1071\" data-end=\"1140\">Inspect each rhizome for pests or disease\u2014discard any unhealthy ones.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1143\" data-end=\"1216\">Irises thrive in Virginia\u2019s full sun and prefer rich, well-draining soil.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1351\">When replanting, create a shallow hole with a small mound in the center. Add bone meal or a natural fertilizer like Espoma Bio-tone.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1354\" data-end=\"1481\">Place the rhizome on top of the mound with roots spreading down into the trench. Avoid burying the rhizome to prevent root rot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">SHARE THE BEAUTIES OF BEARDED IRIS<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to my friends in the Central Virginia Iris Society, including breeder Mike, I\u2019ve learned so much about these stunning flowers.
