We had good, timely rainfall throughout the entire month. We had no late frosty night,s and we did not have many extremely hot days. So, May was good to us. The soil temperature here in Virginia is now 73 degrees and warming.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bNow here we are in June. Here are just a few of the more important tasks to accomplish.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>As we warm up, our flowering annual hanging baskets will dry out much faster. \u00a0Use your finger and feel the soil. \u00a0If it feels dry then water the hanging baskets. \u00a0This may be two or three times a week.<\/li>\n<li>As for flowering annuals, be sure to \u201cdeadhead\u201d as the flowers fade and die. \u00a0This practice will encourage new growth and continued new flowers.<\/li>\n<li>Plant some fresh new herbs and vegetables in June. \u00a0This planting will give you fresh bounty longer into the growing season.<\/li>\n<li>Hummingbirds are here. \u00a0They love flowers. \u00a0And, they love to use a hummingbird feeder.<\/li>\n<li>One common insect to look out for is the aphid. \u00a0Aphids will be found on the stems of new growth. \u00a0Aphids can be controlled easily with a soap and water bath. \u00a0Or, you can use a safe product such as Safer Soap or the organic Horticultural Oil.<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to watering, BE WATER WISE. \u00a0Water wise is conserving water. \u00a0Water early in the morning and not during the heat of the day. \u00a0Also, if possible, use a soaker hose which also reduces the loss of water due to evaporation. \u00a0Thirdly, mulch is a huge benefit when it comes to watering. \u00a0Mulch helps keep the soil moist and cool longer which both benefit root growth.<br \/>\nSo, let\u2019s make June a happy and productive gardening month.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>PLANT A LITTLE HAPPINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JUNE 1 IS THE \u201cUNOFFICIAL\u201d START TO SUMMER \u200bMay ended up being a very good month for gardeners.
