I had a customer come in and say her biggest problem was not mosquitoes\u2014it was squirrels. So here\u2019s how to live with them.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">First, Some Interesting Squirrel Facts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The word \u201csquirrel\u201d comes from the Anglo-Norman esquirel, meaning \u201cshadow-tailed,\u201d with roots in Greek skiouros.<\/li>\n<li>Squirrels are native to every continent except Antarctica and Australia. (The ones in Australia were introduced.)<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re rodents closely related to chipmunks, groundhogs, and prairie dogs.<\/li>\n<li>Their front teeth never stop growing\u2014up to six inches a year\u2014so they gnaw constantly.<\/li>\n<li>Squirrels are omnivores, eating mostly seeds, nuts, bulbs, fungi, and fruits, but also insects and eggs.<\/li>\n<li>They bury nuts and seeds but often don\u2019t return for them, helping plant new trees and plants.<\/li>\n<li>A group of squirrels is called a \u201cscurry\u201d (very fitting).<\/li>\n<li>They can smell food buried under a foot of snow.<\/li>\n<li>Squirrels bulk up in autumn for winter, can leap 10 times their body length, and even see behind them due to eye placement.<\/li>\n<li>The smallest squirrel, the African Pygmy, is about the size of a mouse, while the Indian Giant squirrel can grow up to three feet long.<\/li>\n<li>Some squirrels chew rattlesnake skins and rub the scent on their fur to deter predators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1639\"><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Living <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">with <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Squirrels <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">in <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Your <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Garden<\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1722\"><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Squirrels <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">can <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">be <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">a <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">nuisance, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">but <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">they\u2019re <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">easy <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">to <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">manage <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">with <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">a <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">few <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">simple <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">tricks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1890\"><strong data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1777\"><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Repellents <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">with <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">cayenne <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">or <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">capsaicin <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">work <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">well.<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Sprinkle <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">crushed <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">red <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">pepper <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">flakes <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">in <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">birdseed <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">to <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">keep <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">squirrels <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">away <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">from <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">feeders (<\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">birds <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">can\u2019t <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">taste <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">the <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">heat).<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"2240\"><strong data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"1919\"><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Protect <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">your <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">tomatoes:<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Squirrels <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">target <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">smaller <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">green <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">tomatoes <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">for <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">their <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">moisture, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">not <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">to <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">eat <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">the <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">fruit <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">itself. <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Spray <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">tomatoes <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">with <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">a <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">hot-<\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">pepper <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">spray (<\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">like <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Hot <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Pepper <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">water <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">nearby, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">squirrels <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">will <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">keep <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">trying <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">to <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">suck <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">moisture <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">from <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">your <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">tomatoes, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">especially <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">in <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">hot, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">dry <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">weather.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2243\" data-end=\"2448\"><strong data-start=\"2243\" data-end=\"2265\"><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Stop <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">bulb <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">digging:<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Tulip <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">bulbs <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">so <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">deep <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">bulbs <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">are <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">safe. <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Planting <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">daffodils <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">above <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">tulips <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">helps, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">as <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">daffodils <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">are <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">toxic <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">to <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">squirrels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2661\"><strong data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2488\"><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Prevent <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">digging <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">in <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">new <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">seedlings:<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Loose <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">soil <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">invites <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">digging, <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">but <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">squirrels <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">aren\u2019t <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">usually <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">after <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">seedlings <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">themselves. <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">Sprinkle <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">crushed <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">red <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">pepper <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">or <\/span><span class=\"_fadeIn_m1hgl_8\">cayenne <\/span><span
