Pumps can typically run throughout the winter unless ice forms to the point that water is no longer flowing out of the pond. The PVC piping used in our systems is highly resistant to freezing.<\/p>\n
If you choose to turn off your pump and your pond contains fish, it\u2019s crucial to maintain an opening in the ice to allow harmful gases to escape. This can be done with a pond heater that keeps a small area ice-free or with a small aeration pump designed for winter use. Many pond owners install nets starting in mid-fall to prevent leaves from accumulating. Even if your pond isn\u2019t near trees, windblown leaves can still settle and sink. Skimmers may catch some debris, but their baskets are small and not designed for the heavy leaf drop in autumn. Lightweight nylon pond nets effectively trap leaves before they enter the water. For best results, suspend the net above the water surface. Nets placed directly on the water can still work, but you’ll need to periodically clear them to prevent sagging from wet leaves. Fish are cold-blooded, and as water temperatures drop in the fall, their metabolism slows significantly. Feeding should stop by early October. Even if we experience occasional winter warm-ups, do not resume feeding until mid to late April. On sunny days, fish may appear active and come to the surface, but their digestive systems remain sluggish due to cold water. Feeding too early can cause serious harm or even death.<\/p>\n
