Rudbeckia American Gold Rush

My perennial pick for September is Rudbeckia fulgida “American Gold Rush,” aka Black-eyed Susan! There are about 20 varieties of Rudbeckia. They are grown for their showy, daisy-type flowers, which feature a dark central eye—hence the common name “Black-Eyed.”

Rudbeckia “American Gold Rush”

American Gold Rush is a naturally compact cultivar with narrow, 2 inch wide hairy foliage. Right now, it is in bloom with gorgeous, bright, yellow-gold flowers. Here is a list of feature characteristics of American Gold Rush and the reason why I chose this perennial to highlight:

  • It is a very hardy, herbaceous perennial
  • It was the 2023 Perennial Plant of the Year.
  • Prefers planting in full to part sun.
  • It will grow to be about 2’ tall and about 3’ wide.
  • Once it starts to bloom, it will continue to bloom for an extended period of time
  • You can cut the blooms and use them in various flower arrangements.
  • The blooms attract bees and butterflies
  • When planted properly and in a sunny location, it is easy to maintain..
  • You can grow American Gold Rush in a container and will serve as your “thriller”

Come see us and come see American Gold Rush. You will then see why I chose American Gold Rush as my perennial to highlight for the month.
