February Gardening Chores in Virginia

ONE WINTER MONTH DOWN, ONE MORE MONTH TO GO AND THEN IT’S SPRING

And, what a winter month January turned out to be. It has been a long tine since we have had a winter blast like we just experienced the last 10 days of January.

As of this posting of this blog, Spring is officially here in 45 days ( Friday, March 20 ). YEAH!

Not to get ahead of ourselves let’s talk about February and some of the chores, thoughts, and tasks that we should be doing in February.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY THOUGHTS FOR YOU

SOIL TESTING

I can’t stress enough the importance of knowing your soil. Now is a good time to have a soil test done so that you get the results back and can start correcting your soil up the upcoming Spring season. If you need, we have free soil test kits here just for the asking. Follow the simple steps and send it off to Virginia Tech. You should have the results back in 2 to 3 weeks. You can bring us the test and we will help you understand what is being recommended.

BIRD FEEDING

Continue feeding our feather friends. Enjoy their company.

PRUNING

February is a good month to do some pruning – IF NEEDED. You can prune SUMMER blooming shrubs such as Abelia, Crape Myrtle trees, Roses, Buddleia, etc. Now is NOT the time to prune SPRING BLOOMERS, such as azaleas, rhododendrons because you would be trimming off the flower buds if you do.

HOUSEPLANTS

With our longer daylight minutes and warmer days, our houseplants are beginning to “wake up” and start growing again. So, now if a good time to give them their first feeding of the season.

CRABGRASS

If you dealt with crabgrass last year then you will again this year – UNLESS you do something about the weed. Crabgrass is an annual weed. The weed last year is dead BUT it laid seed in your lawn for 2026. Now is a good time to apply a crabgrass preventer to your lawn. This preventer will help to keep the crabgrass seed from germinating and growing.

VEGETABLE GARDENING

Now is a good time to sow some of your cool season vegetables such as kale, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, and more.

FRUIT TREES

If you have fruit trees then now is a good time to prune while they are still dormant. And, now is a good time to spray them with an ALL SEASON HORTICULTURAL OIL.

ENJOY FEBRUARY AND WHAT IT HAS TO OFFER!!!!!!
